Its organizer and first conductor was Roman Grucza. In the spring of 1988, the band set off on their first trip abroad: to Germany and the Netherlands. Since then, the Copernicus Men’s Choir has been giving concerts in Toruń and other cities in the region, throughout Poland, as well as abroad: in Austria, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Lithuania, and Italy. The band has won many significant awards at domestic and foreign competitions and festivals. In May 1990, Roman Grucza resigned from conducting the choir. The next conductors were Zbigniew Maryks, Jan Lach and Janusz Heyka. In May 1995, Renata Szerafin-Wójtowicz took over the artistic direction, and since September 2003, Paweł Jankowski has been conducting the choir. Currently, the band has thirty singers. Copernicus’ repertoire includes mainly military and patriotic songs as well as sacred works from various eras. The band also eagerly reaches for contemporary songs: Zbigniew Wodecki and Marek Grechuta. There are, of course, also obligatory opera and operetta arias as well as American musical standards. Since June 2006, the Copernicus Men’s Choir has been an amateur artistic group of the Provincial Cultural Animation Center in Toruń. For whom? Meetings open to all interested men. When and where?
