We would like to invite you to the premiere of a film about people who created the face of WOAK over the past five decades. In this documentary Ewa Ślusarczyk reaches for the memories of people who helped build culture first in the former Torun province, and later in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian province – both in larger towns and in the most remote corners. This is a story about artistic individuals who worked together despite their differences, about non-conformist attitudes and entanglement with history, as well as passion and a sense of mission.

As Ewa Slusarczyk, the film’s director, explains: “WOAK is not only an institution, but first and foremost people – their passion, talent and determination, which for half a century gave this place meaning. This film, is a story about a culture that changes with us, a mission that has survived despite the passage of time and many challenges. What were those 50 years like? How did WOAK influence people, and how did people influence WOAK? In this documentary we are not looking for chronicle accuracy, but for emotion, ideas and meaning – what remains when the stage lights go out. The 50th anniversary of WOAK is a great opportunity to look at this.”

Following the event, we invite you to the finissage of the memorial photo exhibition with a curatorial tour led by the exhibition’s creators – former WOAK employees. The exhibition documents the most important moments and people who influenced the development of the institution, and the guided tour will provide a deeper understanding of WOAK’s history.

Ewa Ślusarczyk has been professionally involved in film for several years. She is a graduate of the Andrzej Wajda Film School “Wajda School” in Warsaw, and has received scholarships from the City of Toruń and the Marshal of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. As part of the scholarship, she made a documentary film about senior citizens in Toruń. The project was a bridge between different generations and a kind of film postcard of the city. She is also a graduate of the School of Music Videos in Warsaw, a project of the “Plaster” Foundation. She cooperates with the Bydgoszcz Film Chronicle and the Center for Film Art at the CCA “Signs of the Times” in Toruń.
