Duration of the event: approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes

At January’s DKJo!, we will take a look at Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “Hunters in the Snow.” It is one of the most famous Renaissance landscapes, combining a depiction of everyday life and observation of nature with a multi-layered story about human community. The painting is a winter scene full of details. The artist captured men returning from hunting, accompanied by dogs, tracks in the snow, and in the background, skaters, bonfires, and a vast, cold panorama, which becomes both a document of the era and a space of symbolic meanings.

During the discussion, we will try to answer the following questions:

  • How does Bruegel create the composition using a specific high vantage point, and what functions do the diagonal lines of trees, the silhouettes of hunters, and the opening valley serve?
  • What symbols of winter everyday life (bonfires, dead game, birds, ice games) can we see here—and what significance do they have for interpreting the painting?
  • We will try to understand why the scene of returning from the hunt has been juxtaposed with the lively landscape of the countryside and how this affects the interpretation of the work. How does Bruegel build the narrative by juxtaposing human labor, the rhythm of nature, and peaceful contemplation of the landscape?
  • We will also attempt to answer the question of whether “Hunters in the Snow” is just a realistic landscape or a commentary on the realities of the era and man’s struggle with nature.
  • We will also consider where we can find Bruegel’s winter landscape motif today and how contemporary culture transforms, imitates, and reinterprets it.
  • During the meeting, we will discover together the meaning of this iconic and still inspiring painting, and, as always, we will invite you to join in a discussion, exchange interpretations, and reflect on the work.

The event will be hosted by art historian Łukasz Wudarski.
