The painting, probably created in the 1480s (around 1484-1486), is the quintessence of Florentine humanism and the aesthetics of the Medici court. It is a tribute to ancient beauty and, at the same time, a sophisticated philosophical treatise written with a brush. During the meeting: We will examine the rich symbolism of the work, analyze the figure of Venus standing on a huge scallop shell, the role of Zephyr and Chloris (the winds pushing the goddess towards land) and Hora waiting on the shore with a flowery cloak. We will consider how these elements relate to the myth of Aphrodite’s birth. We will examine Botticelli’s unique style, which prioritized linear elegance over anatomical realism. We will discuss the characteristic elongation of the figure, the unnatural angle of the arms, and the goddess’s “floating” pose, examining why these apparent errors create such a harmonious whole. We will discuss technical innovation, learn why Botticelli chose to use canvas (a rarity at the time) instead of wood, and how he used tempera and gold powder to illuminate Venus’ hair and the leaves of the trees. We will talk about the cultural and philosophical context – how the painting connects with the ideas of Neoplatonism, the poetry of Angelo Poliziano and Ovid, and why it became the first monumental female nude in Western art since antiquity. We will reflect on the universal message of the painting. Is “The Birth of Venus” merely an apotheosis of physical beauty, or is it an allegory of the birth of the human soul, Divine Love, and Truth? As always, we invite you to join the discussion and share your interpretations and reflections on how we perceive this canon of beauty today. The meeting will be moderated by art historian Łukasz Wudarski.
