At the beginning of the 21st century, contemporary French exhibition curator and photography critic Clément Chéroux introduced the term “vernacular photography” into his analysis. He refers to photographs that are neither documentary photography nor art photography. According to his definition, these are photographs in which we don’t know what’s going on, we don’t know why they were taken; These photographs were and are created by non-professional authors, they are usually single photographs, lacking not only a caption, but also a context, not forming a series, a cycle and often – unsuccessful.

The Polish edition of Clément Chéroux’s texts was published in 2014 by the Archeology of Photography Foundation in Warsaw, translated by Tomasz Swoboda. The lecture will be devoted to a joint analysis, with its participants, of the place of vernacular photography in the history of Polish and global photography on the threshold of the 21st century.
At the same time, it is an invitation to look into one’s home collection of photographs. In the second part, the presenter will suggest ways to archive the collection of photographs found in every Polish home.

The lecture of the series “Art of Photography” will be conducted by Stanislaw Jasinski – photographer and photography instructor, member of the Union of Polish Art Photographers. An expert in the history of photography and a collector of antique cameras and other artifacts related to this art.
