Can butoh dance ignore boundaries?

Come to WOAK on Saturday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. and see for yourself. In the auditorium, the Dubilewicz / Wensierska / Krause artistic group will present the premiere of the dance performance “Errors and Failures,” which was created using the butoh dance technique.

The artistic concept was created by Agnieszka Dubilewicz, with performances by Karolina Wensierska, a butoh dancer, and Patryk Krause, a person with disabilities.

The performance Errors and Failures questions the concept of boundaries. We usually assume that various types of boundaries—physical, mental, or social—limit us. But what if the opposite is true? Can boundaries become a creative medium? All we need to do is question them, because they only exist in our minds.

“We are interested in creating an organic space in which every body, regardless of its abilities, becomes a full-fledged vehicle of expression,” explains Agnieszka Dubilewicz. “The butoh technique does not favor able-bodied people or technical skills, but allows us to discover the authenticity and truth of movement,” she adds.

On the other hand, the performance stems from the idea of opposition to the capitalist model of the body, which focuses on efficiency, utility, and perfection. In this context, the passive body becomes a strategy of resistance, a conscious creative and political decision. Physical, social, and mental boundaries cease to be limitations and become choreographic material.

The performance is being created during a month-long residency, which is part of the international Universal Art Design project. Theater, dance, and performance groups are participating in the project. Each of them spends a month preparing a performance or show that implements the principle of universal design in art. So far, the following premieres have already taken place: the performance “Gorgon syndrome” by the NODOstage group and the performance “zbroja” by the Zajkowska/Murawski duo. At the end of the series of project presentations, on November 8, Monika Czajkowska and Paweł Bernadowski will present the performance “NIC” (NOTHING).

The project partners are: the Teatro Stabile del Veneto national theater from Italy and the Kulturanova association from Serbia.
