Manet’s painting is one of the greatest scandals in art history and a milestone in the birth of modernism. The provocative composition—a nude woman (the model Victorine Meurent) looking directly into the viewer’s eyes, accompanied by clothed men in a suburban grove—was rejected by the Paris Salon and exhibited at the Salon des Refusés.

As always, the discussion will be led by Łukasz Wudarski, art historian and director of WOAK. During a brief introduction, he will present the historical and social context of the work, discuss its most popular interpretations, and explore the inspirations Manet drew upon.
