The Art of the Background: Art Photography in Toruń, 1945–1989 | The Art of Photography | Lecture

Discover just how fascinating the story of the evolution of artistic photography in Kujawy and Pomerania from 1945 to 1989 really is. The “Art of Photography” series has already featured the most outstanding, leading figures who set the tone for successive stages of development. However, in the shadow of these luminaries, there were also masters and mistresses working behind the scenes. It is precisely these figures that Stanisław Jasiński will discuss during the next few sessions.

A new lecture series titled “(Un)forgotten Toruń Photographers Since 1945” aims to preserve the memory of those who laid the foundations of the local visual culture. Although only eight decades have passed since their postwar debuts, knowledge about the leaders of photography groups and societies is beginning to fade, and errors are appearing in numerous studies.

During the September meeting, you will learn how, during the People’s Republic of Poland, a distinction emerged between professional photographers, artisans organized into artists’ guilds—members of the Union of Polish Art Photographers—and local creative associations. To what extent was this a real distinction, and to what extent did it merely reflect the bureaucracy of the time? How was the growing community of amateur photographers treated? Although they worked in various professions, they were enthusiasts of artistic photography, and it is precisely from this group that the so-called “masters of the background”—often known only among their circle of acquaintances and friends—frequently emerged.

The lecture will be led by Stanisław Jasiński — a photographer, photography instructor, and member of the Association of Polish Art Photographers. He is an expert on the history of photography and a collector of vintage cameras and other artifacts related to this art form.
