Francisco Goya – Execution of the Madrid Insurgents | DKJo!

During the next DKJo! we will explore together the shocking painting painted by Francisco Goya – “The Execution of the Madrid Insurgents.” With the painting, the painter was referring to the uprising that broke out in Madrid in early May 1808 against the occupying Napoleonic power. In that bloodily suppressed uprising, one hundred and four residents were killed in summary executions without trial. The painter probably witnessed such an execution, which he turned into one of his greatest masterpieces.

What will you experience at the DKJo meeting!

• We will talk about a work that shocks with its impact and is one of the most poignant paintings that deals with the theme of massacre and, consequently, the essence of evil.
• We will learn stories and curiosities related to the painting.
• We will consider to what extent Goya creates a modern secular hagiography.
• We will look for symbols and references.
• Together we will also figure out what role the unusual light plays in the painting and what city is in the background.

As always, you will be able to share your interpretations of the painting. The meeting, in which everyone has the right to speak and the opportunity for their interpretation of the work under discussion, will be led by art historian Lukasz Wudarski.
