During the next meeting of DKJo! we will take a closer look at one of Pieter Bruegel’s most interesting works – the Tower of Babel from 1563. The painting depicts a monumental structure, but what at first glance may appear to be a construction scene hides a lot of symbolism related to the biblical story about the pride of mankind.

Bruegel, inspired by the Genesis story, created a work that not only refers to the Tower of Babel as a building, but also comments on the social and political events of the time.

During the meeting:

  • We will talk about symbolism and hidden meanings in the painting.
  • We will consider the historical and social context in which the painting was created.
  • We will try to discover how Bruegel depicts not only the biblical story, but also issues related to human ambition and chaos.
  • Together we will analyze possible interpretations of the biblical message and references to the socio-political situation of the Netherlands of Bruegel’s time.

As always, everyone will be able to share their thoughts and interpretations. The meeting will be moderated by art historian Lukasz Wudarski.
