Duration of the event: approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes

At the next meeting of the One Picture Discussion Club (DKJo!) we will look at one of the most iconic works of American realism – Edward Hopper’s “Night Marks.” The painting, painted in 1942, depicts a night scene in a New York restaurant and has become one of the most famous depictions of urban loneliness and anonymity.

During the meeting:

  • We will analyze the atmosphere of the painting and the way Hopper builds tension between the characters and the environment.
  • We will discuss the symbolism of light and shadow, as well as the importance of color in building the atmosphere of the work.
  • We will look at Hopper’s inspirations and his distinctive style that influenced art, cinema and photography.
  • We will consider the relationships between the characters – who are the characters in “Night Marks” and what do their attitudes and gestures suggest?
  • We will talk about the historical context of the creation of the painting – what events and social changes may have influenced its subject matter?

As always, we invite you to join us for discussion, exchange of ideas and your own interpretations.

The meeting will be chaired by: art historian Lukasz Wudarski.
