Completed in 1907, the painting completely changed the way figures are depicted in painting and became the starting point for Cubism. What are we going to analyze? How did Picasso break the conventions of traditional painting by abandoning perspective and harmonious proportions? How did elements of African and Iberian art influence the form and expression of the figures? Why did the composition of the painting cause shock and controversy, and how did contemporary artists react to it? What new formal solutions did Picasso introduce, and why is The Virgins of Avignon considered the beginning of Cubism? What is the significance of this work in the context of the development of modern art, and what inspirations can be seen in it?During the meeting, we will explore together the meaning of this landmark painting and, as always, we will invite a joint discussion, exchange of interpretations and reflections on the work.Hosted by art historian Lukasz Wudarski.
